The Council of Ministers decided Friday to disburse 52 million euros for the Institute for Radioelements (IRE) in Fleurus announced the Minister of Energy Marie Christine Marghem.

This amount will help the institution to develop a new technology for the production of molybdenum-99 from which is derived the technetium-99, the radioelement the most used in nuclear medicine in the world.

IRE faces the need to change its production model based on the fission of highly enriched uranium-235 targets and build new manufacturing units.

The assistance granted under the National Investment Plan will make it possible to develop two new production lines and will pass a new technology in 2028.

In this way, IRE will be able to reduce the radioactivity of its waste by 100 times and thus the cost of their treatment and storage estimated at 230 million over a period of 10 years.
